What is Sika Aktivator 205?

Sika Aktivator 205 is a solvent-based, colourless adhesion promoter. It reacts with moisture and deposits active groups on the substrate, which act as a link between the substrate and the primer, sealant or adhesive applied over it. It is specifically formulated for the treatment of bond faces prior to the application of Sikaflex® and Sikasil® adhesives and sealants.

It is used to improve adhesion on a wide variety of non-porous substrates — such as metals, plastics, ceramic screen prints and painted surfaces — enhancing the bond of Sikaflex® and Sikasil® adhesives and sealants. This product is suitable for experienced professional users only and should be tested with the actual substrates and conditions to ensure adhesion and material compatibility, as it is prone to stress cracking.

Typical Substrates

Metals
Plastics
Ceramic Screen Prints
Painted Surfaces
Non-Porous Bond Faces
Glass (UV-Protected)

Key Benefits

  • Easy to use — requires only a simple wipe-on, air-dry on the surface.
  • Enhanced adhesion on non-porous substrates — the active groups act as a link between non-porous substrates and primers or sealants/adhesives.
  • Short flash-off time — evaporates in under 10 minutes at ≥23°C, with the maximum being under 2 hours.
  • Transparent — purely colourless and clear in appearance.

Application Guide

Follow these steps to achieve reliable adhesion when treating bond faces with Sika Aktivator 205. Ideal application and surface temperature is between 15 °C and 25 °C. Always refer to the current Sika Product Data Sheet.

1

Surface Preparation

Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from grease, oil, dust and contaminants. Any adjacent areas must be protected by masking before application.

UAE Tip: In dusty site conditions, mask and clean bond faces immediately before activation — airborne dust settling on a prepared surface will compromise the bond.
2

Substrate Preparation

Adhesion on substrates may be improved by adding and/or combining pre-treatment processes such as scuffing and cleaning prior to the activator application. A short solvent trial is recommended to confirm compatibility on the actual substrate.

3

Application Process

Use a fresh, lint-free paper towel that has been moistened (not wet) with the product to wipe the bond faces. Do not dip the towel directly into the product or re-moisten it, and always use a fresh towel for each application. The surface must be wiped with the clean side of the towel.

UAE Tip: In summer heat (≥23°C, which applies almost year-round in the UAE), the flash-off is around 10 minutes — plan the sealant/adhesive application to follow promptly within the flash-off window.
4

Solution for Process Failure

If the pre-treated area is not bonded within the maximum flash-off time, repeat the activation process — once only. Do not repeatedly re-activate the same surface.

5

Post Finish

For the 250 ml and 1000 ml cans, tightly reseal the container immediately after each use to prevent solvent evaporation and contamination of the remaining product. The 30 ml cans are single-use and should be disposed of after application.

UAE Tip: Heat accelerates solvent loss — never leave the can open on a hot site, and store sealed in a dry place at ≤25°C to protect the 12-month shelf life.
Cautions & Limitations

Not for Porous Substrates

Do not apply on porous substrates — it may not dry completely and can prevent the adhesive or sealant from curing. This product is for non-porous bond faces only.

Product Trial

Preliminary trials must be conducted — the product contains solvent that may dull the surface finish of freshly applied paints. Wipe off immediately with a clean, dry cloth in case of any accidental splash onto nearby surfaces.

Use Minimum Amount

Applying excess product could lead to adhesion failure. It must be used cautiously in the minimum amount required — more is not better.

Solvent Exposure

Discard immediately if the colour turns opaque instead of clear. Dispose of the product roughly one month after opening if used frequently, or after two months for infrequent use.

Never Dilute or Mix

Never dilute or mix the product with any other substance. It must not be used for tooling/smoothing of products or as a cleaning agent.

UV Protection

Use on transparent/translucent substrates such as float glass and plastics requires adequate mandatory UV protection — except when used with Sikasil® silicone sealants and adhesives.
