Sikalite® AE is added to cement/sand mortars and concrete at the mixing stage to produce a waterproof, durable cured matrix. It is used for structural concrete, screeds, renders, floor toppings, and jointing mortars — providing integral waterproofing from within the mortar or concrete body rather than as a surface-applied coating.
Validated for UAE Site Conditions

Formulated for hot and tropical climatic conditions — the AE designation confirms suitability for UAE's 45°C+ ambient temperatures and coastal salt-laden environments. Enhances the waterproofing and durability of concrete and mortar mixes used across Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Ras Al Khaimah — including those subject to saline groundwater, high humidity, and aggressive coastal exposure.

What is Sikalite® AE?

Sikalite® AE is a ready-to-use powdered waterproofing admixture for cement/sand mortars and concrete. It is batched directly into the mix at the mixing stage, imparting waterproofing properties to the entire hardened mortar or concrete matrix from within — rather than relying on a surface-applied coating that can be damaged, worn, or delaminated over time.

When added to mortar or concrete, Sikalite® AE reacts with the cement hydration products to reduce the permeability of the cured mix, producing a denser, more watertight matrix with improved resistance to water ingress. It is suitable for hot and tropical climatic conditions — the AE designation confirms formulation for UAE and Gulf region environments.

Typical Applications

Structural Concrete
Integral waterproofing admixture for reinforced concrete elements — foundations, retaining walls, raft slabs, and below-grade structures
Cement/Sand Mortars
Added to mortar mixes for waterproof bedding, jointing, and pointing in water-retaining and moisture-exposed masonry
Screeds
Waterproof floor screeds for wet rooms, bathrooms, terraces, podium decks, and areas subject to standing water or liquid spills
Renders & Facades
Waterproofing external render coats on walls and facades exposed to driving rain, coastal salt spray, and high humidity
Floor Toppings
Waterproof floor topping mixes for industrial areas, plant rooms, and surfaces subject to liquid exposure and moisture cycling
Jointing Mortars
Waterproof mortar for block and masonry joints in water-retaining walls, swimming pool surrounds, and drainage structures

Key Performance Benefits

  • Integral waterproofing — imparts waterproofing to the full depth of the mortar or concrete matrix
  • Ready-to-use powder — simply batch by weight into the mix at the drum or mixer
  • Suitable for cement/sand mortars, concrete, screeds, renders, and jointing mortars
  • Hot and tropical climate rated — AE designation for UAE and Gulf region site conditions
  • Reduces permeability and water absorption of the cured mortar or concrete
  • Durable performance — waterproofing is within the matrix, not dependent on a surface coating
  • Beige powder — minimal visible impact on the colour of the finished mortar or concrete
  • Easy dosing — weighed in at the mixing stage with standard site batching

Application Guide — UAE Site Conditions

Follow these steps for effective use of Sikalite® AE as a waterproofing admixture in cement/sand mortars and concrete under UAE's hot, coastal, and high-humidity site conditions.

1

Determine Dosage

Consult the Sikalite® AE Technical Data Sheet for the recommended dosage by weight of cement for your specific mix type — mortar, screed, render, or concrete. Dosage varies by application and desired waterproofing level. Weigh the Sikalite® AE powder accurately using site scales — do not estimate by volume. Record the dosage used for QA/QC compliance on UAE projects requiring mix documentation.

UAE Tip: For UAE projects with consultant-approved mix designs (common in Dubai Municipality and Abu Dhabi UPC approved structures), confirm that the use of Sikalite® AE is included in the approved mix design before batching — admixture changes to approved mixes may require re-approval by the engineer.
2

Batching into the Mix

Add the weighed Sikalite® AE powder to the dry cement and aggregate at the beginning of mixing — before adding the gauging water. This ensures the admixture is evenly distributed throughout the dry mix before hydration begins. Mix in the normal way for the mortar or concrete type being produced. Do not add Sikalite® AE to a mix that already contains gauging water, as this may result in uneven distribution.

UAE Tip: On UAE drum mixer sites, add Sikalite® AE powder to the drum with the dry aggregate and cement before water addition. In ready-mix concrete plants, batch the powder admixture at the same stage as other dry additions — confirm the batching protocol with the ready-mix plant operator in advance.
3

Mixing & Workability

Mix to the standard duration and speed for the mortar or concrete type. Sikalite® AE will be uniformly distributed throughout the mix once the normal mixing cycle is complete. The workability of the mortar or concrete may be slightly modified by the admixture — adjust gauging water within the limits of the approved water/cement ratio to achieve the target consistency. Do not over-water the mix to compensate for stiffening.

UAE Tip: In UAE summer conditions, hot aggregate temperatures and high ambient heat reduce workability of cement mixes more quickly than in standard conditions. Use chilled water or ice substitution to manage mix temperature and maintain workability within the target W/C ratio — do not add excess water to compensate for heat-related stiffening.
4

Application of Mortar or Concrete

Place, compact, and finish the mortar or concrete in the normal way for the application type. For screeds, compact thoroughly to eliminate voids and achieve a dense, uniform surface. For renders, apply in layers of appropriate thickness and finish to the specified surface texture. For concrete, compact fully using internal vibrators to eliminate honeycombing — the waterproofing benefit of Sikalite® AE is dependent on a dense, well-compacted concrete matrix.

5

Curing

Cure the mortar or concrete in accordance with standard good practice and the project specification. In UAE hot weather, curing is critical — inadequately cured concrete or mortar will lose strength and watertightness regardless of the admixture used. Apply wet hessian, polythene sheeting, or a compatible curing compound immediately after finishing and maintain for the full specified curing period.

UAE Tip: In UAE summer (Jun–Sep), exposed concrete and screed surfaces can reach 60°C+ during the day — this causes rapid surface drying and thermal cracking. Begin curing as soon as finishing is complete. Shade the area if possible and maintain wet curing throughout the day, re-wetting as often as needed to prevent surface dry-out.
Site Cautions & Limitations

Not a Coating

Sikalite® AE is a mix admixture — it must be batched into the mortar or concrete during mixing. It is not applied as a surface coating and cannot be brushed or trowelled onto a hardened substrate as a waterproofing layer.

Accurate Dosing

Always weigh Sikalite® AE accurately — do not estimate by volume or add by approximation. Over-dosing or under-dosing affects both the waterproofing performance and the mortar/concrete mix properties. Record dosage for QA documentation.

Curing Essential

Adequate curing is critical to achieve the full waterproofing benefit. Poorly cured mortar or concrete will not develop the dense microstructure needed for effective water resistance — regardless of admixture dosage. This is especially critical in UAE's hot, drying climate.
